About Cal Poly and its Environment:
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) was founded in 1901. It is a 6,000 acre campus, located in San Luis Obispo, California. It is a nationally ranked, comprehensive public university that emphasizes a “learn by doing” educational experience for its more than 19,000 students.
For the 14th year in a row, Cal Poly has been rated the best public-master's degree granting university in the Western United States by U.S. News & World Report. Its facilities -- computer labs, classrooms, library, student union, student lounges, health center, on-campus dining facilities, bookstore, recreation center and exercise fields, sports stadiums, etc. -- are excellent.
Asian students, both domestic and international, make up a significant portion of the Cal Poly student body. A number of the students in the business school’s MBA program are also Asian – their country of origin being the United States or Asia. In recent years we have also had students in the MBA program from Italy, Denmark, Iran, Turkey, Korea, Moldova, Pakistan, Mexico, Russia, Ireland, Spain and Thailand.
The brand value of a Cal Poly degree is high. Cal Poly is considered a prestigious and difficult school to gain admission into. A number of students and/or their parents also seek admission to Cal Poly because it is a safe and welcoming environment where students are expected to focus on their studies and are held to high standards. For example, Cal Poly is located roughly a three hour drive from the major metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Francisco. This means when students wish get away from campus for a few days and experience the things a major metropolitan area can offer, these cities are close enough for them to do so, yet they can then return to Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo and continue to focus on their education.
Locally, in their spare time, Cal Poly students can also enjoy almost any type of outdoor recreation -- at the beaches, along coastal dunes and ridges, in forests, mountains, and nearby lakes, ranging from mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, golf, sailing, kayaking, camping, or just relaxing in an unspoiled natural setting.
