About Me: My life's work: to understand & explain how China and the West relate to each other through business. I started my Chinese Studies major (U. Penn) in '81 at age 17; graduated & moved to China (Xi'an) in 1985; married into PRC family 1986; lived & worked in China - mostly Shanghai - through 2003, when I returned to USA. Since then I have not run any major China projects, but I work with Chinese agencies on their USA strategies, and I have learned how to condense 30 years of China relevant knowledge and experience into frameworks and formats that Americans can understand quickly. The China Business Network: There are literally millions of professionals with careers dependent on China's business ties with the west. If you are one of us, sign up. You'll be able to access - and contribute to - the collective body of China business knowledge, and to promote your self as you improve skills. The more we can bring the supply and demand for China expertise together, in a place that is credible and accessible, the more respected and valuable we'll all be.
Harvard Business Review Case
Alcatel: Business as an Adventure describes the background and implementation of a $386 million deal to roll 19 operating companies in China, plus a 100-year old firm's entire IP database, into a 50-50 venture with a state-owned Chinese company. As one of the authors, I worked closely with Alcatel to define the case and arrange all interviews, and with the lead author, IMD's Bill Fischer, to draft the final piece.
